What n8n actually is
n8n is an open source, node-based workflow automation platform. The project has been around for years, but 2026 is when it fully leaned into being “AI-native” rather than just a plumbing tool. An AI Agent node inside that workflow can make judgment calls within its step, but the overall shape of “what happens after the customer form is submitted” is something you draw out, not something the system invents on its own.
What OpenClaw actually is

The costs don’t stop at launch, either. Ongoing model API spend, monitoring, and the inevitable updates when a vendor changes an API or a model gets deprecated typically run 15 to 30 percent of the original build cost every year after. That’s not a reason to avoid custom development, it’s a reason to be honest about what you’re signing up for. None of these is “safer” in the abstract. A badly configured n8n workflow with an overprivileged API key can do just as much damage as a compromised OpenClaw skill. The difference is that n8n’s node-by-node structure makes it easier to spot where that overprivileged key lives and revoke it. Go in with eyes open about the operational discipline it demands: review what skills you install, keep it updated, and don’t give it access to anything you wouldn’t hand to a new hire on day one.
Save custom development for the process that’s genuinely core to how you make money and genuinely not served by either of the above. That’s a smaller slice of the market than most vendors selling “custom AI agents” would like you to believe, but when it’s real, it’s worth the cost.
