Our guide to OpenClaw’s security risks covers the general threat model. This post is narrower: which ClawHub skills are actually worth installing if you’re running a small business, and how to tell a genuinely useful skill from one that’s about to steal your Google Drive credentials.

That second part matters more than it should. ClawHub had a real malicious-skill crisis in early 2026, and the exact numbers depend on who measured them and when. One audit found 341 confirmed-malicious skills out of roughly 2,857 published at the time. As the registry grew past 10,000, other counts ranged from around 900 (Bitdefender’s figure, out of 10,700 skills) up to 1,184 and 1,467 in two separate studies, one of which named the wave of attacks ClawHavoc. None of these numbers agree exactly, because they’re snapshots from different months of a registry that was growing fast and getting attacked at the same time. What they agree on is the direction: a meaningful share of ClawHub, at points in 2026, was actively malicious.

Quick answer

ClawHub now runs published skills through automated scanning (VirusTotal integration, a tool called ClawScan, and an NVIDIA partnership announced in June 2026), and skills that pass carry a Verified badge. That’s a real improvement, but a badge alone isn’t a substitute for checking a skill yourself: look for a public GitHub or GitLab repo you can actually read, a publisher with real history, permission requests that match what the skill claims to do, and enough downloads and reviews that you’re not the first person testing it. For small business automation specifically, the categories worth automating first are inbox handling, calendar and scheduling, and customer support triage, and there are established skills in each category with enough of a track record to be worth a look.

What actually happened on ClawHub

The short version: OpenClaw’s skill marketplace grew fast, and for a while, vetting didn’t keep up. Researchers found several distinct waves of malicious skills through early 2026, with total counts ranging from the low hundreds to over a thousand depending on the audit and the size of the registry at the time. One wave, dubbed ClawHavoc, involved skills uploaded under names designed to look legitimate. Another study found prompt injection payloads in over a third of skills sampled.

ClawHub’s response, rolled out through the first half of 2026, included automated static analysis and behavioral testing before a skill goes live, runtime isolation so each skill executes with its own permission boundary, encrypted credential storage so API keys never sit in plaintext, and a formal review process that results in a Verified badge on a skill’s listing page. None of this makes the marketplace risk-free. It does mean a skill with a Verified badge, a real repo, and an established publisher has been through meaningfully more scrutiny than one that showed up last week with zero reviews.

How to check a skill before you install it

This is the part that actually protects you, badge or no badge.

Open the skill’s page on ClawHub and look at the SKILL.md, the publisher’s history, the version number, and the security-scan result. A publisher with two or more years of history and other published skills is a better bet than a brand-new account. A skill with zero ratings and no comments hasn’t been tested by anyone but its author.

Check that the skill links to a public GitHub or GitLab repository. If you can’t read the code, you can’t audit it, and an unauditable skill with broad permissions is exactly the pattern behind most of the incidents above.

Read what permissions it actually asks for. A skill that claims to draft email replies but requests write access to your entire Drive, contacts, and calendar is asking for more than the job needs. Legitimate invoicing or scheduling skills request the specific scopes those tasks require, not everything at once.

Watch the name. Several of the ClawHavoc-era skills used names nearly identical to popular, legitimate ones. Check the publisher, not just the title, before you install anything with a name you half-recognize.

If you can see what domains the skill talks to, check them. A skill built for Gmail and Calendar automation has no reason to be making requests to an unfamiliar domain you don’t recognize.

None of this takes more than a few minutes per skill, and it’s the difference between “probably fine” and actually checked.

Skills worth a look, by task

These are named because they show up repeatedly and independently across write-ups of the ClawHub ecosystem, not because any one source paid for the placement. Verify each one against the checklist above before you install it. ClawHub changes fast, and what’s safe today isn’t a permanent guarantee.

Scheduling. Calendar-scheduling skills built around Cal.com integration are common in workspace skill bundles aimed at small teams, letting an agent find open slots and book meetings without back-and-forth email.

Customer support triage. Support-focused skills that read incoming tickets, answer common questions from your own documentation, and escalate anything they can’t handle are widely available, and they’re worth the extra scrutiny since they typically need read access to your support inbox or ticketing system. Confirm the escalation behavior actually works before you let one run unsupervised.

One vendor, ClawTrust, packages a bundle of 43 workspace skills covering roles like receptionist triage, sales qualification, and support escalation alongside individual integrations like email and Cal.com scheduling. Bundled skill packs like this can be a reasonable starting point for a small business that doesn’t want to assemble automation piece by piece, but the same vetting applies to every skill inside the bundle, not just the bundle’s name.

What to skip entirely

Skip anything with no public repository. Skip anything requesting permissions broader than the task it claims to do. Skip brand-new publishers with a single skill and no history, especially if that skill’s name is close to something popular. And skip anything that isn’t Verified unless you’ve personally read the code, since the Verified badge is the one signal here that reflects actual review rather than just popularity.
