What Claude Cowork actually is
Cowork is Anthropic’s agent for non-coding work, separate from Claude Code, which is aimed at software developers. You point it at folders you authorize, connect it to business apps through connectors and plugins, and hand it multi-step tasks: build a report, update a spreadsheet, draft an onboarding packet, keep a recurring task running on a schedule. Before Cowork acts on anything significant, it’s designed to show its plan and wait for approval rather than just running.
The bigger architectural change came on July 8, 2026, when Anthropic moved Cowork’s execution into the cloud. Instead of a task only running while your laptop is open, the agent loop and any code it executes now run inside isolated cloud sandboxes on Anthropic’s infrastructure, with no outside network access unless an admin explicitly allowlists a domain, and file access limited to what you’ve authorized. That’s what makes the web and mobile clients possible: kick off a task from your phone, close the app, and check back once it’s done. If your business genuinely runs its customer and vendor communication through WhatsApp or Telegram, and you want an assistant that lives inside that channel rather than a separate app, OpenClaw still does something Cowork doesn’t replicate as naturally. But go in accepting that you, or someone you trust, needs to treat OpenClaw’s updates and its skill installs the way you’d treat patching a public-facing server, because that’s functionally what it is.
