A separate, less confirmed anecdote: Axios reported, via an AI consultant describing a client, that an unnamed company spent roughly $500 million on Claude in a single month after failing to set usage limits on employee licenses. How agent costs actually run away
Strip out the enterprise scale and the pattern underneath these stories is the same whether you’re Uber or a single developer.
Long autonomous loops are the biggest driver. An agent working without a human checking in, whether via a leaderboard incentive or a cron job on your laptop, keeps consuming tokens for as long as it’s allowed to run. Nothing stops it except a limit configured in advance.
Large context windows compound everything else, since a conversation grown to hundreds of thousands of tokens costs more per turn even for a trivial follow-up, because the model re-reads the accumulated history each time. A pre-flight checklist before you start an agentic task
- Confirm you have an actual hard spend limit configured on the specific account, workspace, or API key you’re about to use, not an alert-only threshold and not an assumption based on your plan tier.
- Decide whether the task is interactive, a person watching each step, or unattended, a loop, scheduled job, or overnight run. Unattended tasks need an explicit max-turns or timeout value set beforehand, since nobody will notice a loop until the bill arrives.
- Check how large your current conversation already is. If you’re deep into a long session, compact it or start fresh rather than making the agent reason over hundreds of thousands of tokens of history for a small question.
- Know what the tool does when a call fails repeatedly. Retry storms, an agent retrying a broken call hundreds of times, are one of the most common ways a cheap task turns expensive.
- Check which model tier is actually active. A routine edit rarely needs your most expensive model, and a pinned frontier model or “max” mode left on by default is an easy way to leave the meter running.
